NVIDIA Abandons TSMC COUPE Technology Plan
NVIDIA has decided to temporarily abandon the use of TSMC's COUPE (Compact Universal Photonic Engine) technology plan due to TSMC's slow progress in advancing silicon nitride (SiN) technology and the underwhelming development of the two-dimensional grating coupler. NVIDIA's original "Plan A" was based on TSMC's COUPE Co-Packaged Optics (CPO) platform, utilizing 8-wavelength DWDM and approximately 50 to 64G NRZ modulation technology. The latest "Plan B" shifts to Tower Semiconductor's silicon photonics (SiPho) platform, employing 16-wavelength DWDM and 200G/400G PAM4 modulation schemes. Industry insiders indicate that market participants were aware of this adjustment as early as six months ago and criticized some information disseminators lacking a fundamental understanding of the underlying technology for creating market panic. Furthermore, as the modulation rate increases to higher levels, the requirements for lasers in terms of relative intensity noise (RIN) and linewidth among other key metrics will also significantly rise.
