Base network interruption review, caused by a sorter bug leading to two consecutive outages
According to official news, the fundamental cause of the two consecutive interruptions last week on Coinbase's Layer2 network Base has been confirmed to be a software bug in the Sequencer block construction logic. The Base engineering team stated that an invalid transaction, after failing to execute, should have cleared the related temporary state (Journal State), but due to a programming defect, the old state was incorrectly retained, ultimately causing the Sequencer and validation nodes to be unable to continue generating new blocks. As a result, the Base mainnet experienced two interruptions in block production, the first lasting 116 minutes and the second lasting 20 minutes. The team mentioned that although a patch was applied to fix the Sequencer state update issue, a "Race Condition" occurred after the system restart, preventing the Sequencer from timely resynchronizing, which triggered the second downtime. Additionally, some infrastructure issues also extended the overall recovery time.
Base stated that it will strengthen protocol fuzz testing to enhance the ability to discover vulnerabilities under abnormal input scenarios and optimize the network recovery mechanism to avoid similar incidents in the future that require manual restarts of validation nodes. It is worth noting that this is not the first time Base has experienced failures due to Sequencer-related issues, as it previously had network interruptions of approximately 17 minutes and 30 minutes in September 2024 and August 2025, respectively. Currently, Base remains the second largest Ethereum Layer2 network by total value locked (TVS).
